Navigating the world of home remodeling permits and building codes can be overwhelming. Take control of the process with these suggestions:

1️⃣ Research Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with the specific permits and building codes required in your area. Check your city or county's official website or consult with each of your contractors for guidance.
2️⃣ Call your Local Inspection Office: Consider calling your local inspectors office who will help guide you when securing permits. They have limited office hours, so check your town/village/city website for the best way to contact them. Ensure you reach out to the right area, as there may be multiple inspectors for different trades.
3️⃣ Allow Ample Time: Start the permit application process well in advance of your planned remodel start date. Delays in obtaining permits can disrupt your project schedule, so plan accordingly.
4️⃣ Compliance Is Key: Ensure that your remodel plans comply with all relevant regulations. Work closely with your contractors and any necessary professionals (such as architects or engineers) to meet all requirements. Ensure all contractors have valid licenses and insurance, including liability and worker's comp in case anyone gets injured on your job site.
By following these suggestions, you can navigate permit predicaments more smoothly. Or, jump to tip #5 to remove the task from your plate all together!
5️⃣ Engage a Professional: Consider hiring a General Contractor who is experienced in securing permits. They understand the process and can handle the paperwork on your behalf.
